Brief

Redevelop and redesign the FBU website to make it easier to find information while improving the presentation.

The new site needed a strong information architecture to handle the thousands of pages of content and still be easy to use.

Client

The Fire Brigades Union is the leading trade union for firefighters and other workers within fire and rescue services across the UK.

Having served members for over 100 years, the union has supported firefighters, influenced fire safety policy and won improved pay, terms and conditions for its members.

Solution

We used the latest version of the Drupal Content Management System (CMS) to provide an enterprise class open-source system that could manage the complex requirements.

The Fire Brigades Union site is information-centric, with about 5,000 pages of content. We focused on a strong information architecture, optimising navigation and utilising subject taxonomies. Site search has been carefully configured and additional search algorithms were deployed.

Design and resources

A modern and effective design was a must, so the new website used the latest standards in responsive design, ensuring effective display on mobile, laptops and high resolution desktop screens.

Resources are critical on the FBU site. The organisation publishes lots of information such as member circulars, publications and detailed pay information. The union also has collection of member forms (both downloadable and online) and a policy archive from past conferences. The dedicated resources area makes these easy to find, with filters for location, subject and campaign.
